In Acts chapter 2, Peter delivers the first gospel message to the Jews who were gathered for the Feast of Pentecost right after Jesus' ascension into heaven. In his message, he speaks about the death and resurrection of Jesus, and starting in verse 36, tells them that all of the house of Israel (also called the Jewish people or the Jews) should know assuredly that God has made this same Jesus, whom they had crucified, both Lord and Christ. When the crowd of Jews heard this, they were cut or pricked to the heart and said to Peter, "What shall we do?" Peter tells them, every one of them, to do two things: 1) repent, and 2) be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, promises that if they do these two things, they will receive the remission or forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit.
