Saul had been intensely persecuting Christians and had consented to the killing of a Christian named Stephen. As a result of Saul’s and others' persecutions of the Christians, they were scattered around the world. On Saul’s way to persecute more Christians, Jesus appeared to him on the way to Damascus and told Saul to go into Damascus to wait to be told what he must do. Saul waited in Damascus for three days for instructions, during which he repented, prayed, and fasted. After three days, God sent Ananias, telling Ananias that Saul had been praying, to tell Saul what he must do to be saved (after three days of repenting, prayer, and fasting, Saul's sins still had not been washed away). In Acts 22:16, Ananias told Saul the thing he must do to have his sins forgiven. The answer was not that his sins were forgiven through repentance, prayer, and fasting alone. Saul needed to do one more thing to wash away his sins. The answer is given in Acts 22:16.
After Saul’s sins were washed away, his name was changed to Paul, and he became a faithful apostle of Jesus Christ, going throughout the world telling everyone the same thing he was told to wash away his sins. These scriptures are given on the reverse side of the bookmark where Paul tells these truths to Christians in Rome, Corinth, Ephesus, Galatia, and Colossae, and to the minister called Titus.
